Jones & Vieira Collect NEAC Basketball Players of the Week

LATHAM, N.Y. – Cazenovia College’s Thomas Jones and Morrisville State’s Rachel Vieira take home North Eastern Athletic Conference men’s and women’s basketball Player of the Week honors.

Thomas Jones (Rochester, N.Y.) helped Cazenovia go 2-1 last week, including a 2-0 weekend in NEAC play. The freshman averaged 19.7 points, 8.3 rebounds, and 2.7 blocks over the three contests. Jones scored 23 points against Nazareth on January 7 and Penn State Berks on January 12 around a 13-point performance against Penn College on January 11. In the two league contests, Jones averaged 18 points, nine rebounds, 2.5 steals, two blocks, and two assists per game while shooting 69.6-percent from the field. Against Penn State Berks on Sunday, Jones added 12 rebounds to his 23 points for his first double-double of the season.

Rachel Vieira (Caruthers, Calif.) led Morrisville State to a 3-0 week that included two NEAC wins. The freshman started the week with a career-high 33 points in a non-conference win over Clarkson where she shot 64.7-percent from the floor and drained 5-of-10 from beyond the arc. She added four rebounds, three assists, and four steals. Vieira followed with a 27-point outing against Penn State Berks in an 84-76 NEAC win, again hitting 50-percent from behind the three-point line, and 50-percent from the floor. She added another five rebounds, two assists, and three steals before wrapping up the week with 14 points in the win over Penn College. Vieira had a week high four assists and five steals in the win against the Wildcats. In all, the freshman stepped into a point guard role for the Mustangs, and averaged 32.3 minutes per game, shot 46.4-percent from the floor including an average of four three-balls per contest, while hitting 10-of-14 from the free-throw line. She collected a total of 12 rebounds, nine assists, and 12 steals while blocking two shots.
