NEAC SAAC's Mental Health Initiative

LATHAM, N.Y. – The North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) Student-Athletic Advisory Committee (SAAC) conference-wide initiative this fall focused on student-athlete mental health and person well-being.

With today being World Mental Health Day, SAACs around the NEAC will be placing green pinwheels around their campuses to promote mental health, personal well-being, destigmatizing the issues surrounding mental health. While also making student-athletes and students aware of what resources are available for them and knowing that there are support systems on their teams, in their athletic departments, and around campus.

“Over the last two years, NEAC SAAC has led the way in facilitating important conversations around student-athlete mental health,” said NEAC Interim Commissioner Stephanie Dutton.

Dutton added, “With the pinwheel project serving as our first conference-wide event centered around mental health and personal well-being, I look forward to seeing our student-athletes being engaged on World Mental Health Day to create a greater awareness at each campus for continued education and advocacy to break the stigma associated with mental illness.”

World Mental Health Day 2019 focuses on the major public concern of mental health promotion and suicide prevention. The World Federation for Mental Health’s goals to achieve this are; prevention of mental illness, promotion of good health, reduction in the stigma associated with mental illness and improved access to evidence-based mental health care.

Mike Litz, NEAC SAAC Chair, said, “I’m incredibly excited for World Mental Health Day, and our participation through the NEAC SAAC pinwheel project. As we place the pinwheels across our individual campuses, the NEAC is showing a unified front for mental health awareness. I look forward to seeing all of the day’s pictures, stories, and videos from all across the conference!”

Everyone is encouraged to use the #WorldMentalHeathDay on social media platforms today to promote awareness and to give #mentalhealth a higher priority.
